About Our Group

The Portland Big Book Step Study Group was formed in the spring of 1999. We hold our business meetings starting at 8pm on the last Tuesday of each month. We generally hold our group anniversary in June. In June 2026 we will be celebrating 27 years!

This is a Hyannis-Style Big Book Step Study AA Group. This means that our group follows a specific format that focuses on working on the steps as they are laid out in the Big Book.

The meeting usually lasts an hour and a half with no break. It’s divided into three basic parts: the reading of that night's step from the book, the speaker, and discussion of the step being studied. Only people who have completed steps 1-8 following this process, and are currently working steps 9-12 may share during the discussion portion of the meeting.

There are many Big Book Step Study meetings, mostly on the east coast. This site from North Carolina has great information. This site from a prominent group in New Hampshire has many many speaker recordings available.

Location

Our meetings take place at Portland's Salvation Army Adult Recovery Center.
